Fretless Banjo

Tack on head on a walnut pot. Cocobolo neck. I'm trying to not post many non-CB instruments here but I had a question about this one.

  • this is great! I have been wanting to make a banjo. Do you think I can swing it out of an old small bongo?

  • I love those words. Thanks! Strumhollow, Frailing scoop. Poetic. Would make good band names or album titles. Bowholler is very nice also. I'll be off to Bowholler for a beer. I have a very strange gas can ukulele that has a Strumhollow that I added. I'll have to get a photo up tomorrow. You'll like it. It's a design I first saw back in the late 60s in an old house in Flora Ohio. I sketched it then and then found this one on ebay. It's the same design, so must be made by the same person or a design from "Popular Mechanics" of some such. Cool sound like a steel drum and a ukulele.

  • Thanks Dave. On banjos we call that dip a frailing scoop to give clearance when playing over the neck. On dulcimers the strumhollow (I like the way that sounds) serves a similar purpose. I thought about something like that for a CB fiddle (bowing scoop? bowholler?) but haven't tried it mainly because that would put the bridge very close to the front of the box. That may sound alright but so far my fiddles have the bridges near the center. Still got a lot of experimenting to do! I agree anything creative, different and fun should included in here. One thing I really like about all these type instruments is freedom from rules.

  • Beautiful job. And I don't think other builds than CBGs should be excluded from our fun. I like the unusual neck area by the heal. This could be an idea for box fiddles. A place to bow where you won't hit the box.
