I marked 1.5 inches high all around the can with a fine tipped sharpie. I used a dremel with a cut off wheel to cut the can. It can be done with a fine tooth hacksaw but you have to support the can on the inside. Clamp a 2 x 4 off the bench and hang the can on it. Then use light cuts.

How did you cut the Coffee tin for the tone ring?  I've been wanting to build one of these and that's the part I can't figure out
