First CBG

Fully assembled. Not bad for a first try, but the tone isn't great. Not a good instrument in its own right.

  • I like the sound holes too, but I think I made them too big.  Cut away too much wood.  The trouble is that acoustically the highs are too harsh, the lows too subtle and the mids pretty much nonexistent.  And it's weak.  My Les Paul is louder acoustically.  I've since tried heavier gauge strings and factory tuners and they don't help.  And the problem carries over when I amplify it using the piezo disc method.

I don't know.  A box that shallow is probably only capable of so much resonance to begin with, and the way I oriented it probably isn't helping.  This was my first go.  I've since built three more stringed instruments, each one better than the last one.  I've already ordered a Flatpup 3 for my Mean Stick.  If that works out I might order another one and see if I can save this one.

  • Looks well done.  Like the sound holes.  Box should sound okay to good.  I wonder if some factory tuners would help..  Oh, the strings look thin..?..   I like to use acoustic ADA strings tuned GDg  ---   or the DGE strings tuned either DAD or CGC.
