First Build "La Primera"

All done and it sounds amazing, even acoustically which I'm surprised considering this paper covered hardboard box. Very playable and a lot of fun!

  • Yup, a second on what the Pup said.  Thin is good for tops.  Support the corners and as needed near - but not directly under the saddle.

  • Thanks for the comments. I'd never even played a CBG before so I wasn't sure what to expect for sound out of this thing. I suppose box material doesn't matter as much as I thought.

The box I just picked up for my next build has a fairly thick lid, I might router it down or something to make it thinner. The other consideration I'm thinking of is volume, because this one just doesn't seem to carry any low frequencies. I'm hoping the next box which is significantly bigger might help in that department.

I actually picked up 3 boxes from a shop here yesterday, all solid wood this time. The other 2 are the boxier kind - I want to try an amp kit in them.

  • Sweet looking build! I agree with Those two down there VVV. I have several fiberboard Punch boxes and have built 2 guits with them so far. Both sound really good. I've discovered that it's less about what the box is made of and more about how thick the lid is. The closer to 1/8" (3mm) the better.

So now that your first build is done, what's next?

  • Paper boxes often do sound good.   I agree with Chip.  I have a den full of cbgs.   Wood, fiber, paper covered, home made..   The top 3 are wood fiber.

  • Looking good! I have built several with hardboard lids, and they all sound great! I don't know why so many people dislike them?
