fiddles 008

No.8 Shildmaid. This particular box, I picked up at a flea market (flomarkt) in Germany, when I was stationed over there. It is from 1934 and had a receipt in it for 40 Reicht Marks. It is the first one that I have made that is really a good player. Notice the "f" holes are lower on the box so that the bridge lines up with it. Although it was made with a 3/4 neck, it is a full 4/4 scale. To accomplish this I had to install the fingerboard about a 1/2 inch above where the nut is supposed to be. Notice the nut is almost over the "g" string peg.It has fair volume and tone, and the string are almost right.

  • I carved the first two necks, I've used second hand necks off of ebay and others and started buying partially carved necks from China lately. The scroll is completely carved. That's the hard part. The "handle" part is rough cut. Not too hard a job to finish that out.

  • did you carve all the necks?
