Started with a piece of .040 brass sheet. Ran me 18 dollars for a 1 square ft piece, and had to go to the metal yard to find it. Drew on the design, cut out the rough rectangle with hacksaw and did all the real shaping with a grinding wheel. If you had a bandsaw with a metal blade you could just touch it up with hand files.
