I like these little banjoleles. They work great and are easy to fix if all the parts are there. They have kind of a strange system for tentioning the head. The flesh ring rides down inside the slot for the tone ring. I've got several of these babies. They rock.
Looks like a nice old piece. Probably best to string up some nylon uke strings and try it as a uke first. Would have to change to geared tuners for mandolin strings. Cool wall hanger- better yet if it is a player. I am NO EXPERT, but it could be from the 1920s.

Ran across it yesterday, while lookin for something else in the barn...knew i had it, just forgot where i put it for safekeeping...lol

Yup...think your right John...Pick showed me a "Mele" from 20's on canadian evilbay...very much the same...

You can also string and tune these like a 4 string mandolin.
