  • Yeah fretboards are all I've ever used jatoba for- the thought of making a neck out of it though? whew! That would be one tough beast. Same with ipe or cumuru.
  • I have some under 3 foot t n g Brazilian Cheri floor boards I use them for fretboards
  • Patagonian Cherry (Tiete Rosewood) is 2,790 on the Janka scale, Brazilian Cherry / Jatoba is 2350 so they're close. The stuff I have is quite dense - it got burnished a bit when running it through a table saw.

Tapping my neighbor to help me shape the neck of my current build with a router because rasping it by hand would take forever!

  • superb stuff

  • Thanks, man. So is patagonian cherry similar to jatoba (aka brazilian cherry)? That shtuff is intimidatingly hard and heavy.
  • these are beautiful builds by the way

  • Craig- check through my photos of my mandolin builds. They are all holding up quite well without truss rods, although some are kept tuned to GDgd instead of standard GDae. The hardness of that wood should translate to a bright sound, like purpleheart or ziricote. Which is great with a mandolin!
Let us know how those builds turn out!
  • The cone and cover are from old lowe
  • St that a electric stove insert and a drain cover reso
  • Cool. I've got some super hard Patagonian cherry (2790 on the hardness scale) I'm going to use for mandolins without truss rods. might do a 5-string banjo too
