A friend picked this up for me for $10 at a yard sale since he thought it was some kind of banjo. It has Japanese/Chinese? writing on it but I'm not sure what it is. Only one glued on fret left. Appears they were spaced diatonic like.

Thanks much for the info everyone. I'll follow those leads and try to find a match. I will try to duplicate the one remaining fret and glue them where they once were. The fret stands about 1/2" tall so I'm guessing you could bend the note by applying various amounts of pressure.

btw, a traditional Japanese shamisen is covered in cat skin :)
The Characters on the label are Japanese. But a traditional shamisen has a more rectangular body and no frets...
