Thorsten,
Thanks for the information! I have another build I want to do before I start the bass but I am really excited to get started. I have a few questions about the bass on my mind right now but I'll wait until I get the build started to ask you about them.
Hi Chuck. I'm glad you like my uke bass. The design of your pineapple ukulele is pretty awesome. I've showed it to my children and they like it a lot. Concerning the bass ukulele... I used "pahoehoe" strings from Road Toad Music. You'll find them here: http://www.bassuke.com/Pahoehoe.html - I used the ones with 20-21 inch scale. My bass has got 20" scale length, I installed no frets to make it sound like a double bass (you can hear it at my christmas song video http://www.cigarboxnation.com/video/sugimugi-winter-flavours . The pickup is a simple 27 cm piezo disc, but no preamp - nevertheless the bass is loud enough. The most important items of all, however, are the tuners. First I used bass guitar tuners which didn't work well as the strings always slipped over the shaft. Then I found good tuners at www.largesound.com - the ones which are built in ashbory basses (and they have fair prices - you'll also find other interesting parts for such a bass like silicone strings, nuts etc. there). I've heard that the silicone strings are more difficult to keep in tune, so I never used them although they're half the price as the pahoehoe strings. I've just started to build three four string-bass ukes, one for a friend from switzerland. I''ve designed a new headstock - so what you have to keep in mind is to make a reversed headstock, it works better with the string lengths. Ashbory basses also have reversed headstocks. I hope I could help you a little.
Thorsten,
Hello, my name is Chuck and I've been building CBGs for about 4-5 years now. I enjoy building and playing CB Ukes lately. I really like the looks of your Bass, very nice work!
I am really interested in building one for my brother, he is a bass player. I would like to know all about the strings you used on this project, the tuning machines, the scale length, etc.
When you get a chance and don't mind sharing your knowledge I would be very grateful for any help you could provide.
