Well, in theory those arches let more of the box top ring out for better volume. "Real" mountain dulcimers often feature this as well. Later ones I made had even bigger arches. You can also just raise up the fingerboard with little 1/8" risers if you don't have access to a drum sander, which is out I made these.
Glad you like it! This is two Don Pepin Garcia boxes, and the piezo is mounted under the fingerboard inside the neck. I drilled a 1"+ hole in the bridge part of the neck before I glued on the fingerboard.
