I was really fortunate growing up to have a neighbor across the street who was a graduate of Ithaca College's music school. He had a huge synthesizer he built in college as well as many other commercial models. I was fascinated by creating different instrument voices by just turning a dial, but I never dedicated the time to actually playing keyboards all that well.
All this was in the upper level of an old Finn chicken barn he used as a studio and workplace for his electronics and laser animation business when that was really popular in the 80s.
