The neck is a super-light balsa type wood from the specialty bin at Lowes which I sandwiched around a piece of red oak to beef it up and of course the purpleheart also helps keep it straight. This lightweight composite wood has a really interesting color to it when the sealer is added. So far, the only downside to it is that it is REALLY soft and have to be careful about gouging it.
