I usually try to make sides about 1/4" thick with the tablesaw. Mine are usually Oak. It's maybe a little thick for bending, but there's lots of surface area for gluing the top and bottom on without kerfing if you're using something like Titebond.
I don't know, I usually overbuild, but they're good and strong!
I think with a Dulcimer anyway you get most of the sound from the top and bottom
Thanks for posting. I am building on out of the 2 x 4's I was going to get rid of. My sides are thinner than yours. I am wondering if thicker sides would be better for sound?
