Inspired by the recent postings of Banjo builds etc; using wooden bowls, I dug out my bin of bowls which have been gathering dust in my shed from the time I started acquiring them from from Charity Shops over the past couple of years, one is Teak another is Huon Pine, and the rest of unknown Timber, they were all priced between $4.50 and $2.

I have in 'Days of Yore' previously built the two Bowl Tack Heads pictured, both are Goat Skins, the one on the right was soaked in a Coffee mixture, but not sure what type of timber the bowl is, the bowl on the left is Camphor Laurel and do have a bit of trouble with the skin tension, I think because of the humidity in our area, The Coffee Top build needs a bit more experimentation with string gauges and tunings etc;
I've found that the thick ones of more common wood take thr tacking best. Tha thin Teak is very brittle. Those should get kerfing of some kind to tack into. My fancy shaped bowl cracked along the tack line for about four inches. I'm pre drilling using a finishing nail bit almost as deep as the tack shaft. The last one I used fewer tacks so the holes would be spaced farther apart. These are the lessons learned in three builds. Oh, don't use cut nails. They are like little splitting wedges. Keep the bowl in your lap, not on the bench, while you tack the head. Add a block around the neck hole to brace it. Have fun...

Just about to start using it, so just posted some closeups to see if anyone has any ideas as to what it is or was, because I don't have a clue!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
