I started with a 1 1/2" by 3/4" piece of poplar and glued a thin strip to the side for the 5th string. I used to carve it from one piece of wood but this has proved to be quicker and easier for me. I glued another piece of poplar under the first where it passes through the body and cut two notches out of the tambourine so it would fit flush to the top of the body.and leave a 3/4" space below the tambourine head.

So, it looks like you carved a 1x2 for your banjo neck. Yes? I want to build a 5-string banjo with a cookie tin as the body. How did you do yours? Did you glue a strip of wood to the 1x2, or did you carve it out of the 1x2?
