Bad luck and bargain drill bits.

This neck is already glued and screwed into the box. Gees. I usually have the tuner holes and hanger hole done before I put it in the box. This is a relic build and I still hope to salvage it. I spread the crack with a screw driver, worked in glue and clamped it. Will cut it off about an inch - no hanger hole. We shall see.

  • Ha, Dave.  It glued up fine.

  • Head that is.
  • That will work Uncle. Nice crack.
  • LOL, Thomas.   My Oh Shite file overflows.   And most often I can save them.

Man, this one really sounds good.   Thin (3mm  ply) top and bottom.   Hole cut under the saddle part of the wood thinking to get more volume and a reso sound from the metal (aluminum).   Got more volume, I think.  But it does not sound metallic or reso like....

  • That's the nice thing about these things. Pretty hard to screw them up so much that we can't fix them. I imaging that we all have an "Oh Shite" file that we will keep as a reminder of simple jobs gone wrong. Except me, I never mess anything up, well there was that one time, but it really wasn't my fault. It could happen to anyone, but it didn't really happen those other times.

  • Thanks, guys.   It glued up fine!

  • should be fine U J,but i wouldn't cut the top off, just fill the top hole with epoxy,   then drill it out again a touch undersize, seen crackheads uglier than that

  • Bad luck, ok! I do like that too some times, but then I make plugs of any available piece of exotic wood, and then the problem goes from bad to art...or I do as Hal suggests. I'm quite sure your solution works too.

  • Might try that, Hal.    I'd like to go out and sand it and see how it looks.   But it got to 10 below F last night.   Kind of cool in the shop.   I had it warm enough yesterday for the glue to set.
