Baby Bolivar 2

Had a Bolivar Britanicas box that was a bit too small to be a CBG and a piece of oak that was a bit too short to be a good neck. Decided to try a quick 'stick in a box' build, but ended up making this. 23.5-inch scale, coil-tapped rail pup, 21 frets, capped headstock. It sounds OK for such a small thing :-)

  • Hi Tom,

The strings feed through from the back. They go through holes in the box and then through a brass plate which is grounded (this may not help if the string ends are painted). On top of the box, they feed through bicycle spoke nipples to stop them cutting the wood. It's a bit fiddly to change them - much easier if the lid is open and you can feed them through one stage at a time. Pic of the back below - the dark veneer is a repair where my ham fisted drilling split the original :-\  At the headstock, they run straight from the nut to the tuners - didn't need string trees.

  • How do you tighten the strings down?  Easy to switch them out?

  • Thanks Davey - I'm hoping to play it a bit more soon and see what I can do with it :-)

  • Oh always read to the end ;-)

  • Looks nice hows it sound on the smaller scale?
