AGP #520 - ''Sam''

AGP #520 – “Sam”3 String Fretless Baritone GuitarScale : 736.6mm / 29 inchesStrings : .040NW / .026NW / .018NW /Tuned: G D gThe first build for 2024, as with most of my Builds, all the Timber is Recycled & Free, mainly from discarded or gifted pieces of Furniture etc., the Box sides are Tasmanian Oak, the Top and Bottom Sound Boards are Qld Walnut (Endiandra palmerstonii), and the Laminated Neck is Camphor Laurel and Pine.Note: For a long time one of the favourite Finishes I used on my Timber, was Shellac, using the Brush On Method, however it does come with a few problems, like runs etc., so in my research to find out how to apply the age old method of French Polishing, I discovered a previously unknown method to me of Wood Finishing, which was devised and and used by a Legendary Rocking Chair Maker, by the name of Sam Maloof (the price of which are well out of the reach of this poor peasant). This is apparently a quote by Sam Maloof"It is a mixture of one-third linseed oil, one-third raw tung oil, and one-third semigloss urethane varnish. I apply it generously and then rub it off completely so there isn't a wet spot left anywhere. I let it sit overnight and then add another coat. The process is repeated about 4 times. Then I make a batch of finish that is half linseed oil and half tung oil with some shredded beeswax mixed in. I put two coats of that finish on, and the chair's finished, ready to be used."On this particular Build I gave it two Coats, and then used a similar Commercial Paste Wax for the final coat, but I will be making Sam’s Recipe, along with a few other Paste Wax Finishes of various ingredients. :-)
