AGP #258 - ''Tomato Crate'' (2)

AGP #258 - “Tomato Crate”(3 String Tomato Box Guitar)Scale : 635mm / 25inchesStrings : .036NW / .024NW / .18NW /Tuning: A / E / a /Found the Tomato Crate at a Second Hand Trader’s, not sure what the Timbers are, the Soundboard is ¼” Hardwood, the sides are ⅝” either hard Pine? Or soft Hardwood?, (I think aged Pine)and the box bottom is ⅝” from a treated leftover Pine fence Paling, which I added. The Neck is recycled unknown Hardwood from a neighbours Reno’, it was painted with Iron Oxide (a Vinegar and Steel Wool solution) and then liberally coated with a 50\50 Linseed Oil & Turps mix, and the Crate is as purchased and left untreated, the Nut is a bit of cut down Brass Piano Hinge and the Bridge is same timber as Neck, an 11.6k Open Humbucker with Vol and Tone, and an Under Saddle Piezo Rod Pickup with Vol is wired through a 3 Way Switch to the Jack.

  • "Thanks Brent Briggs", the hardwood top of the box had a reasonable tone to it when tapped, so thought a Piezo Pup would offer something extra, (even though I'm not a big fan of Pieoz's), still playing around with Amp and the combination of the 2 different Pups, and hope in the near future to post some Vids ?

  • "Thanks wes carl"

  • "Thanks Gary W aka Rev. Bluejeans), Yep!, the piano is still offering up parts, just cut another dozen or so necks this week, and still a lot of bits and pieces of Spruce Pine etc.; to be used.

  • "Thanks Uncle John", Yep!, one my fave style of look also, especially the neck (recycled & "free")    :-)

  • "Thanks Jerry Jordan"

  • "Thanks Dave Lynas", the neck had a few different colours, where it was sawn and rounded etc.; but the Iron Oxide mix made it a little more uniform.

  • "Thanks Bluesheart", as I've stated before on CBN, actual Cigar Box's at an affordable price are a bit thin on the ground In the Land of Oz, so most of my builds these days are repurposed or recycled stuff, as far as for all the details, most of my ideas have come from details put up by other CBG builders, and if anyone learns anything from my details, then I'm a "Happy Chappy"

  • "Thanks Rick Alexander" I agree, I think Tomato's are Cool !!

  • Cool looking build. The pickup setup sounds cool as well. I am going to try something similar with a reso that I am rebuilding. I would love to hear how it sounds.

  • Very cool, AGP!  Great look - and I'm glad you're still managing to use piano parts in your builds!
