AGP #175 - ''Rat Strat''

AGP #175 - “Rat Strat’’(3 String Cigar Box Guitar)Scale : 648mm / 25½inchesStrings : .038NW / .028NW / .018PS /Tuning : GDGThe cheap ($10.24 AU) ebay pre-loaded pick guard on this build had been sitting in a draw in my shed for abt 2 yrs, and after seeing a similar build on the Nation a few weeks ago thought that it was the best way to use it, the neck, nut and box sides are from my reliable supply of recycled Piano timber, the box top & bottom are 7mm Pine Ply, and the fret board is Red Oak, the timber was given a few coats of a brush on French Polish.

  • lol @  wayinder  .

  • Thanks 'Wayfinder', sorry! to beat you to the punch :-), but I think there has already been a few similar builds posted on the 'Nation', (please still keep it on your build list though, and I'll look forward to seeing your interpretation!) the offset neck feels fine to me, and although I don't play a lot of fretted chords owing to a bit of arthritis, I think I will fret this one, as I think it feels comfortable enough for me to have some success.

  • Thanks 'Jim', I have never had a top quality set pickups etc' to compare, but to me the cheap Chinese Ebay pre loaded pick-guards sound just fine, this was the third one I have used, the previous two being another Strat type, 4 String - AGP-#85, and a 4 String Bass AGP-#25, both on solid body builds.

  • Thanks 'Blue Collar Devil'

  • Many thanks James O, I have been watching and enjoying your recently posted vid's, someday I may get confident enough (or good enough) to post my own.

  • Thanks Jim-In-Tuscon, yes! the piano is serving me well, and there is still a few kilometres (miles) to go yet.

  • Thanks 'Pick'

  • Thanks 'Uncle John', your right the neck is not centred to the box, but it is centred to pick guard & pups etc. The box is 12" in length, 1⅝" deep and 10" (to me a nice comfortable size), to centre the neck in the box would have meant widening the box by another 3", which I thought would have looked a bit out of proportion.

The back of the neck is of course recycled piano, the darker tone is a veneer of what I think! is Maple over some sort of Poplar, this veneered Poplar? is from the main case of the piano, which is all about ¾" thick.

  • I don't know, AGP.  That neck does not look centered to me....    Pretty nice, man.   Really nice wood tones and great looking back of the neck.   I'd like to take it for a spin.   A different and good look to it.

  • yum yum .
