  • That is a handsome git!  Yeah, agree with Rob on the head stock.

  • Hey thanks. I found a pic on the net of this design and thought it was nice so I worked it in. I later looked into it and found it was a Banjo head. Sort of a reverse Fender head design, ya know.

  • I like a lot of things about this build but my favorite part is the headstock design.

  •   looks  like  ya stole that  taile piece from the gates  of  hell  .. lol, i  luv it ;-)

  • Hey everyone, big thanks for sharing the stoke. I certainly appreciate all the support. This site and it's contributors have been a great resource of ideas for me. Now that I'm addicted, I think a soprano ukulele may be next.

  • that's  pretty  nice  man ;-)

  • I'd like to thank all the CBG builders here on Cigar Box Nation for sharing photos of their own guitar builds as this was incredibly helpful.

This is my take on an old 3 string Cigar Box Blues Guitar made with reclaimed wood and found objects. The box is a Dominican Cohiba cigar box. The tail piece is an old boat hatch hinge. I used old gambling dice for the volume & tone knobs and chose the numbers 5 & 2 as it's a lucky roll in Craps. The neck wood is from an old front door we replaced recently and is 70 year old Dade County Pine ( thats Miami Florida). Can't let that go to waste. For the nut and the saddle I used hard bone filed down from a dog chew bone. The wiring access plate is covered in a faux alligator skin print for a little touch of the old bayou. The top deck and fingerboard are walnut and I also added some mahogany for trim. The Humbucker pickup, tuners and jack are from my daughter's old retired guitar (my daughter is the guitar player in the family and she has since move on to better equipment). The guitar is light weight and has a good bluesy growl when plugged-in.

The case I made for it is from plywood scrap, some old portfolio handles that I found in the dumpster behind work, and some leftover wood veneers. I then lined it with charcoal gray crushed velvet. My upholstery skills need serious work though. All in all it was a real self-education in junkyard luthiery.
