I've thought about the toothpicks. Seems pretty easy to do. I'd be concerned about the longevity of them with steel strings. I'm sure one of these days I'll make a Nylon stringed something and I'd like to try them.
I believe they are #16 finishing brads with the heads nipped off. I cut a groove with just a normal pull saw and mitre box. Then I put a bead of super glue in the groove and set the nail in it. Then I file it all up and make it as pretty as I can. I plan to get a fret saw and fret wire from stewmac and do them up right. This works great though and people never believe that you're playing a guitar with nails on it.
