#21 lap steel, Supro model

Closer look at my Ebony fretboard with white airbrush markings. I just used masking tape on my pencil marks one at a time working my way down to the 24th fret. One coat of varnish over my latex white spray job.

  • Thanks Stewy, Jan, I like tonal transitions which gives the illusion of 3 dimension. I'm not sure how it will play out in use yet. I have tried it on my "Happy Cyclops" diddley bow and it seems to work ok. I'm looking for a way to paint on fretmarkers for lap steels. I've not seen this technique used before. On my old Regal the markings are sprayed through a stencil. Cutting a stencil for such an elaborate marking would be difficult. My method makes it easy with simple masking tape on my pencil markings. This was a curved fretboard which made the marking with a pencil tricky. I'm a little off on some of the result, but good enough for me...

  • I like the scalloped effect from it.

  • So cool, the roundness illusion at the sides end! makes it almost unreal.

  • Wormil, well, It's a fret board. I got it given to me to use for such a purpose. It came free to the fellow who gave it to me. It has knots in it. They go right through the board and render it unsuitable for a fret job. I value my work and don't feel like i should be restricted in using the reclaimed material that i use. The result should sound good and please me. Sorry Wormil, i'm using it. ... Dave

  • Looks cool but seems like a waste of an increasingly scarce wood. Why not just use dyed maple?
