I started with an old housing. not sure what type of radio. No back, no actual radio, tubes or controls. just a shell. paid about 15 bucks. then refinished with black stain on the sides, similar to the original black sides. then natural stain on the rest. made a plywood back. Bought a small RockTron amp with a 6" speaker (same size as previous speaker, i.e. the hole was the same).
The finish is 3 coats, hand-rubbed Tung oil. #0000 steel wool lightly after each coat.
Took amp apart, embedded it into housing. Used new Vintage grill cloth and a new leather handle. re-used the rubber feet from RockTron amp. Hooked it all up and jammed.
