I agree. I have even seen flat ones on dreadnaughts. But for the price, I don't mind a bit of contour. There are a few ways to deal with it, but like you say, it is a compromise and you risk buggering up a perfectly good build.
I wish they would make flat fascias for these pre amps. The only way they look really good is to "counter sink" them into the box.....and then it's still only a compromise :-( There is a mandolin active preamp available that is flat, but it's pretty pricey.
