  • When I took her to the vet, I knew the time had come for her to go, and the vet was Polish girl, she looked so very young, and I'm ashamed to say that I looked at her and thought 'please God, don't let her get it wrong and hurt my dog any more than she's hurting now'! In fact she was very gentle and she put her to sleep quickly and painlessly! 'Scales' was so tired I think she was glad to go at that stage, I think it was more of a shock to me because I'd taken her for her usual walk the night before and she appeared to be fine, but the next morning she'd had the stroke that was to be her end! The vet was so gentle and even got a print pad and did a paw print from the dog and cut a small clump of fur for us to have as a keepsake!  Our new dog Ivy has softened the blow so much, I'd be lost without her now!

  • Chick Who Tinkers, you're so right my friend, thanks for the comment!

  • Good wishes to you and Mrs. Slim.

  • Thanks John, I've had my wife quite ill for a while, but she's on the mend now although she'll always walk with a stick in future, but hey, she's still here and that's all that matters! To be truthful I knew the old dog wasn't going to be here for much longer and wanted to soften the blow for my wife by taking on the other dog!

  • Sorry for your loss.   We have almost the same story only with cats.  Took on a new one in the summer of 14 and lost old Elvis the day after Christmas of 14 at age 18.  I still miss him, but the pain is pretty much gone.

  • My old dog had a stroke recently and had to be put to sleep, aged 18, but about a month before she died we took on a portuguese rescue dog to keep her company. Her name is Ivy and she's around two to three years old.
