Spoke Shave

Picked up an antique spoke shave at the flea market to use for shaping necks. Needs more sharpening but seems like it is going to be very satisfying to use. I'm mostly using hand tools only since we moved to MA. I like being more "in touch" with the wood.

  • borrowed a flat and a convex from a pal then bought my own, cost less than £30 for the two by Stanley. easier to set than the old type.just keep them sharp, makes shaping the neck a pleasure...

  • Nice tool, I have been using my grandfathers on most of my necks, once you get used to it you will love it. Keep the blade sharp and don't set it too deep. And contrary to what some will tell you you can push or pull the spoke shave, you just have to feel the grain and which way it cuts best.

  • nice looking.  I wonder how they work on red oak.  I would imagine you need some strong hands, shaving sharp blade, and the right depth adjustment.  I've been wanting to try one, but not sure the arthritis in my hands could cooperate.

  • Oh yeah! Been on the lookout for an old spoke shave. I see them at yard sales & flea markets occasionally, but not usually this nice/rust-free.

  • I have one of those.  Never been able to master it, though. :(
