Hi all..So i've run across some pics of CBGs where the 1x2 neck is mounted to the top of the box rather then through the box...I've personally only ever built through the box CBGs but i wanted to get opinions on the "on top of the box" style.... Thanx

there really both great ideas and a great way to get differnet sounds if you record with the both agaiant each other, one as rythum one as lead
I've done both....I prefer thru the box. The only reason I found for doing them outside the box was because the box was only 1" thick. It sounds pretty good...but I do believe a pickup is in order, I find the sound is a bit low.
So i ended up building a single string Diddley Bow with an on-top of the box neck...I must say it came out pretty nice and is good and loud ..
Hi Mike, I build my diddley bows for a school group with paper boxes that way. I actually use the wood botton as the top. I have made one 3 stringer, just as a test CBG, so I can change the strings for different tunings and it works OK except that the struming area is only 1 1/2 inchs wide. So I don't recommend it. The sound is about the same as a neck though. Will

Never even thought about the reduced playing area..DOH!!! Thanx for the info.. :-)
Seen a few played where the right hand thumb is planted against the neck on the top edge, then finger pick the strings... looked like a good technique. I'm gonna make one soon.
