Looking to get started

I've fallen in love with the idea of CBGs, and I'd really like to build my own.  I'm having trouble finding parts and I don't have a ton of tools to build with at the moment, so I'm trying to find something of a "one stop" shop that can either sell me the parts I need or sell me a guitar at a reasonable price.  I've seen a few things on EBay that seem a bit overpriced, and being from the US but living in the UK I'm finding it hard to cope with how difficult it is to find stuff here :)

Any advise or suggestions you guys might have? I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks,

Hubert

  • I have had some bits supplied by Mr Chickenbone ( can I call you john ?), he sells a workshop pack inclusive of piezo and jack which includes everything you need other than the cigar box itself and the neck for a very reasonable £16.25

    • This might get you started: The Works CBG  kit for £30

    • Believe it or not, I bought that very kit to get used to trying to play slide a week or so ago, but I went to thebookdepository.com and got it for half that.  I know it's not amazing, but it's got a decent enough sound acoustically and I'm getting used to slide with it.  Thanks for the response, the advice is always welcome!

  • I sell pretty much everything you need for making cigar box guitars. Check out my online store. http://www.chickenbonejohn.com

Apologies for the blatant commercialism, but cigar box guitars are my business, not my hobby. All the parts we sell are exactly the same as we put into our own ChickenboneJohn®  guitars.

    • I've got no problems with blatant commercialism, it's the sort of thing I'm looking for.  I'm trying to put together my options for when I've got the money :)  I've got some Sapele blanks that are 1.5 x 1.5 inches (give or take) and I'm trying to see if I can use them for anything while I'm gathering up the funds to get something more well-done.

I'm actually really interested in taking one of your building workshops if you do another one.

Thanks for the reply, and if anyone else has something to shill feel free :)

    • It is possible to build good guitars with the bare minimal of tools and with little workspace.

Before you go running to eBay or jump into a building class or buy one (that's like missing out on the fun) I suggest that you read everything you can and just jump right in and make something.
