Cedar Cigar Boxes a few questions

Hi All

I am looking at importing some cedar cigar boxes for CBG construction from a company that makes them for cigar Manufactures. The boxes would be unbranded allowing for the option to be fully customisable. I am looking at around 10x6x3 inch's for the size for the purposes of quotes at this time.

I am wondering if this would be of interest to members of this group and does anybody have any preference in size? And any ideas of what would be a fair RRP price for the boxes? All of this information will help me to see if this is a viable venture.

Thanks

Paul

  • Really pleased to see the discussion on this. I am still looking for a supplier and when I have found i will post options. It will take me a few weeks because I have four weeks of radiation treatment to complete but i will do what I can in that time.

    • Hi Hector,

Sorry to hear you are having to endure radiotherapy....thinking of you. Tough call but you will get through it with some grit and determination.

If you need some finances to order in cigar boxes than just give us a shout and we will do whatever we are able to.

Genuine large gigar boxes are preferable to home made boxes but I have just finished making a stunning Yew & Steamed Pear box that looks lovely and when it's oiled up and completed with a Figured Maple neck it should look lovely.....and probably sound like crap, but there we are.

All the best and stay in touch,

      Dave & Caroline

    • ...seconded, we'll be thinking of you man.

  • Hi Paul,

We are new here today but we would love some of the cigar boxes.

We have a pretty well equipped woodworking shop for making anything small and gicar box guitars and amps are something we have been fiddling with for a while. Finding cigar boxes of a decent size is hard work so we have started making some from Yew, Steamed Pear, Plum, Maple and Cherry......but that kind of goes against the spirit of cigar box building.

    All the very best,

    Dave & Caroline.

    • Hi Dave and Caroline,

Do you sell the boxes you make? I would imagine that going to a cigar box wholesaler for plain boxes would likely yield the same result.
    • Hi Richard,

No we don't sell any of the guitars we make but give some away to family, friends and kids.

Trying to obtain decent size cigar boxes is difficult although we keep looking.

      Dave & Caroline

    • And you don't sell the boxes either, I imagine? All I was getting at was in the absence of cigar boxes, I'm always on the lookout for alternative boxes...

      For example:

306126141?profile=RESIZE_320x320This is a plain wooden box I bought from eBay, which I sanded, painted on an acrylic wash and then coated with poly varnish.

I certainly looks nice, but as I haven't finished the guitar yet I can't speak for its tonal properties!

    • Hi Richey,

No we don't sell the boxes because we never have enough even for our own use. If you read my firt post you will see that we have taken to making our own boxes from some really lovely wood that we machine and plane down ourselves.

Your guitar looks excellent. Let us know how it turns out regarding sound and playability.

One thing to add.....cigar box guitars really are a cool thing to be making and playing :-)

      All the very best,

      Dave & Caroline.

    • Hi D&C, the guitar is now finished, and it actually sounds pretty good. Nice and loud and the box seems sturdy enough... tone is good, very bright.

I'll post a video at some point.

    • Hi Richey,

Hey that looks lovely. Do you have a pickup in it or is it acoustic only?

I just picked up a bargain box of single coil and humbucker pickups so we will be experimenting with some blues boxes, which should be fun. I just have to locate some volume and tone pots to get started.

      Looking forward to the video.

      Dave & Caroline
