No makeup necessary. I think he was showing solidarity with local artists - a white cross on a black background is the flag of Cornwall, where he's based. For him, I think he pulled it off and it looked pretty cool - on the other hand I think it would probably turn out to be egregiously non-cool if those of us with paler complexions tried blacking up to get the same effect.
