  • Murray, just pitch the tops and use the bottoms for your project, I use them with the mdf tops and they sound fine, but if you want to show the wood grain, use the bottom.
  • Naivete...When I started peeling the paper from the edges I found the sides and bottom were 1/8" plywood with a very thin cedar veneer, and the heavy top was MDF (!!!) with the same very thin cedar veneer. Hmmpfff...so I guess they were worth the $1-2 each... :O(
  • i will not get anything off of ebay do to the shipping
  • I got this hairbrained idea to look for 4, 6, maybe 8 of the same kind of cigar box and take them apart, and 'bookmatch' or however else I could make a larger top and bottom to make a larger instrument.

I stopped somewhere last weekend and they had 8 or 9 red Punch boxes...I took 8 at $1 each!

There were 4 even larger ones, Don Fuente or some guy who sounds like that, about 8"x12", all the same but priced from $2 to $5...I said 'huh?' at the cash register total, explained my confusion, and he rang those in at $2 each. A customer walking by said "too bad those aren't full boxes"!

Sorry to sound like bragging, but it seems to be cheaper than buying sheets of cedar! They're kind of thick anyway...

  • Lowes has stock 1 1/2 poplar, pine and oak strips they are 3/4 thick and are very nice. the pieces are 6 feet long. Will make 2 necks..

Check past the diy stores and I'll bet you'll find some building supplies that normally deal with contractors that have selections of other woods suitable for building CBGs.  If you're in a large city you may have to hunt, but a small town or in the countryside, probably wood distributors or mills might be available too, and if all else fails I know there are online sources online in the UK---some I'd love to have availability at a reasonable rate and no quarentine.
  • I bought mine off ebay sellers in the USA, as mentioned the shipping charges are horrendous - 26 dollars / 16 GBP, but two or more combined shipping can ease the cost on a single box.
