Just a thought ...

I see we're posting our files which some of them are great. I also see where some of us are asking about the key. May I suggest a couple of things... 1) post your file telling us the key its in or your tuning. 2) if you can on the same or separate file, a simple open chord or a note in your tuning. I use OpenD / D7 or Open G. I would strum a chord or at least the low D for us to tune to. 3) If you are using Audacity, might be helpful to open the file (mp3?), do your work, save just your channel as well as the mixed file. this might be interesting as others can take yours, loop it, or otherwise edit. 4) one post had beat counts at the beginning. Again if you use Audacity that would be easy to do as a separate channel (Click Track). See example attached. CAVEAT: seems the audacity projects can get REALLY big. so if you are going to upload .aup files, might want to save only your track, zip it and upload it. -Wes

    Hey guys, what about canned backing tracks? Any thoughts on those?

    Hmm, I think they're OK to get a song started, but wouldn't want to release a "finished" song with one. IMNSHO, of course. For instance, the drum track on my "starter" project was generated from Hydrogen: I would normally prefer to have it replace by "real" drums before the final mix.

    Good points, Wes!

    It would be also be helpful to outline the "form" of the song, e.g.:

    This is a !2 bar blues in A, quick to the four. Play three verses, then an eight-bar bridge (IV-I-II-V), then a final verse. Close by tagging the final four bars of the last verse twice.

    A chord chart for that would look something like:

    Tempo:   Medium shuffle, 120 bpm

    Verse (3x):

    A7 / / / | D7 / / / | A7 / / / | A7 / / / |

    D7 / / / | D7 / / / | A7 / / / | A7 / / / |

    E7 / / / | D7 / / / | A7 / / / | D7 / E7 / |

    Bridge:

    D7 / / / | D7 / / / | A7 / / / | A7 / / / |

    B7 / / / | B7 / / / | E7 / / / | E7 / / / |

    Repeat verse

    Tag:

    E7 / / / | D7 / / / | A7 / / / | A7 / / / |

    E7 / / / | D7 / / / | A7 / / / | A7 ||
