Telephone Speakers

Cleaning out some closets the other day I found some old corded phones.  Tore them apart and saved the mic and earpieces.  Anyone use these in a CBG?  I'm thinking that old AT&T parts were pretty high quality to last for so many years and I remember the tonal qualities of old phones was pretty clear (not like the crappy cell phones of today).

  • You know, one thing that I tried and it worked was one of the speaker elements from one of those 'talking' greeting cards. You know, the ones that play a song or clip when you open them. I had to use a preamp tho.

  • Yeah, that's probably right.  I hooked up both to a practice amp with alligator clips and definitely got some clear "taps" out of the earpiece (speaker), not so good with the mic.

The speaker would probably work either as a contact pickup (mounted like a piezo) or a vocal microphone. If the mic is a crystal mic, it would probably work better as vocal mic. The crystal mic shouldn't need any additional power like a condensor mic (newer phones) would.
