so I have a half dozen tuners... with NO screws to hold them in place.
Do I have to buy these at a guitar shop? Or can I find the equivalent at a hardware?

Thanks, great information. I sometimes ask the obvious, since I often didn't know it until someone pointed it out to me....

Oh, sure. My drill press gets a good workout installing tuners.... I was dealing with the "Ping" tuners that are likely made in China; a good value for the tuners themselves, but cheap hardware.
I was going to say before....If you can't find the tiny screws, it's a simple matter to slightly drill out the screw holes in the tuner itself to accept a slightly larger item.
Go to your local hobby store that carries radio control supplies. Dubro sells a package of small screws, rubber washers, and brass sleeves for mounting servos for RC planes and cars. Use the screws for the tuners, and use the brass sleeves for running your strings through on the bottom of the guitar. $2.30 for a package. Here is a link to their web site.

Are you drilling pilot holes for the small screws?

The screws that typically come with the cheap tuners are of really poor quality; they tend to snap off as you screw them in. I've found tiny screws in the "odd parts" bins at Tru Value and other hardware stores. You may have to physically look through a bunch of trays.

Before I throw out any old electronics, toys, or anything that has hardware, I strip it down for parts. You can find all sorts of uses for these spare parts.

I only ask because the last time I bought them from a local (locally owned, non-chain) guitar shop and he said that they were only able to get them at shops.

SOmetimes when I have to get several CBG's out in a hurry I use small brass tacks ( the kind with the small head) instead of screws. They just tap in place in a second and your done, ready for the next neck.
