    Apologies for the metric but I use measurements if 5mm from the edge at each side if the nut (so roughly 12.5mm between each string, and a string spacing of 14mm at the bridge. I feel this makes it easier to play with the right hand, particularly fingerstyle!

    I've always gone 1/2", which leaves about a 1/4" on either side.  Works for my non-trained hands, and my friends that play seem to do just fine with it.

    Really just depends on what is comfortable to play. One of the real advantages to building the first couple guitars with a piece of all-thread for a nut and a bolt for a bridge is you can make adjustments easy and learn what you like before making a less adaptable nut and bridge style as in a traditional guitar.

    Spacing can be from 5/16" to 3/8", but also need to consider how far from the edge you want the outside strings to be. A fair distance from either edge is about 1/8" to 5/32". But ultimately it is up to you and what feels and plays good

    I almost always go with half an inch on either side.
