I am new to CGB having acquired one about 6 weeks ago. I am having trouble playing the slide cleanly. I am wondering if the action is to low or more likely it's my bad technique. Guitar is tuned to open G with metal frets. Can someone direct me to a good video on how to play with a slide. Thanks. Jaws

  • Yeah Jaws here's a nice little video that should help you out.

    • Can't believe Mike has 6 dislikes for his video. That's just wrong!

      • Maybe they like the vid, but just don't like Mike? >:-E
  • Have a look at the free stuff out there. If you ever find you need a more structured approach have a look at my site, it's all about building skills, specificaly fingerpicking and playing slide.

  • Try just playing just the high string and get used to the light touch that is required.  Then when that is working well, go for the middle and high string.  Finally, do all three strings.  This can be a weeks-long process depending on how you progress.  Getting the right vertical (in line with frets) angle to get accurate tone and the correct pressure across all strings to get minimum rattle is difficult.  It will vary by player and from one guitar to the next.

It is sometimes helpful to mute the strings behind the slide with your index finger to avoid some of the rattle and harmonics and it also helps you get equal and light pressure on all strings.  It all comes down to practice.

The videos out there are great, but they are more about learning specific songs, riffs, etc.  Not a lot more advice on slide technique than getting the right touch for the combination of you + guitar + slide.

    • Good advice Eric. I like the last bit about getting the combination right.

  • Hey! Look under "Groups" on this site...there is a ton of advice, good links and lessons available.....and dont forget to use minimal pressure with yer slide ;-)
