I know there are other videos out that that show how to fret, but I thought I would put one together that shows how I go about it. I know there are lots of tools and techniques that can be used, all of them good ones. This is just the way I do it. If someone gets some value out of it great, if not there are loads of other resources available to help.

Check my profile page for the video.

Thanks to Ben for the intro music!!

Enjoy!

  • I did it by trial and error mostly. I got some fret wire and cut a few test slots in a piece of scrap wood first. You can't have the slot too shallow or the fret will not seat all the way down. You can cut it a little too deep with no ill effects. That is why I like the fancy fret saw so much, I just set the depth correctly and from then on, I don't need to worry about it. When the saw stops cutting, the depth is correct.

If the fret won't tap all the way down, then the slot is too shallow.

Some people actually nip off the tang on the end of the fret so you don't see it showing on the side of the neck. Then they mix a little glue with some sawdust and then put some of that "paste" in the side of the neck and sand it smooth so it doesn't show.

  • Very interesting video. I'm gonna fret my next one. Question, how deep do you cut the slots?
  • Nice informative vid Dan
  • Thank you, Dan for all of your videos!  I just found out about CBG's a week ago and I am anxious to begin a few projects.  Your instructions have taken a lot of the mystery out of the equation and and hopefully my first builds will be successful!
  • Hey Dan, my pleasure. Great video. I'm glad to see you got to work on that bass a bit today. It must have been nice to be able to work outside for a change. Still, no trouble keeping a beer cold on a day like today I'd imagine...
