Drilling the headstock to fit the tuners fills me with dred. Everytime.
It should be simple enough, but without a drill press, I find it nigh on impossible to get everything in line.
Marking where they go is no problem - a tape measure or a template works fine, but by the time Im through 20mm of wood, I can be a couple of mil out on the back - not good when Iv only 40mm of neck to play with!
So how do you guys do it? Am I missing a trick here?

I just spent the money and got the two tuner jigs from stewmac and have been very pleased with them. No more worries and crappy holes for me. I was going to get a drill press but wife said no in the condo as a spare room is my workshop.
Look up inside the chuck, they sometimes have a screw to keep it in place. It may be a left hand thread.

Ted, I have that first one, and was going to rig the old plug-in Craftsman drill we have to it, but can't get the damn chuck off, and I've taken several swings at this. Any ideas how to get the chuck off? I backed it off with the key and even whacked at it with the rubber mallet, just like the instructions say. Stuck on but good.

Rockler has a drill press that uses your hand drill for $45.
That's correct, . There is a left handed screw (1/4" or 6mm) in the bottom inside of the chuck and the chuck most times has a right handed thread. But a person must use a thin wrinch on the shaft that holds the chuck. Then use the chuck key in one of the holes as a lever to unscreaw the chuck. And all chuck threads ( the large thread on the outside of the shaft) are not equel some are metric and some are inch.
I can post a photo if it would help, just ask.
Cheers

Diane, -I'm not being insulting, condescending, or an a$$, but, have you taken the screw out of the inside of the chuck? If you open the chuck all the way and look down inside there is a screw that holds the chuck in place, usually a torx or phillips head. It is reverse threaded, as is the chuck usually. A vise or good pair of channel-lock pliers can be very handy.
