cases

so what are you all putting your cigar box guitars in? i'd think something like a mandolin or banjo gig bag might work, but i really want to build some cases. anyone have any experience with this?

  • Hey matt,
I make my own cases. Soft cases out of moving blankets and hard cases out of anythings made of wood i can recycle. Hope this helps. Check em out on my page.
  • I was thinking of playing around with some burlap bags for a soft case to carry the guitar in.
You could sow one of those a burlap rice bag with a zipper already attached to it for an outside pocket.
Some padding and an inner lining would be a good idea to keep your favorite cigar box ax from being scratched up.
Add a strap and a draw string to the bag and your ready to go. Go jonny go!!!
  • Hey Matt. I use two different cases. My most robust is this case I made from duct-tape (jeez I love that stuff) covered cardboard lined with luan. The bumpers are pieces of closed-cell foam pipe insulator.

The other one I use (sorry, no pic right now) is an old pair of jeans with a rope threaded through the belt loops, and then looped down and tied around the cuff-openings. You put the guitar in the waist, feed the neck down one leg, then pull the waistband tight. Works like a gig bag, looks admirably disreputable.

it's amazing what you can do with foam board and ducktape...

    the best,

  • I use one of my rifle cases for the box guitars ( not expensive as I have them any way) and I have a cheap keyboard bag/case for the lapsteels of ebay.
