I'm suprized at the lack of activity in here. I thought this would be one of the busiest groups. So anyway, my latest build is from wood saved from the trash trucks grip. Over 100 yr old black…Continue

I find some of the best stuff while out walking the dogs. Here are pics from this morning. 10 heart shaped ring drawer pulls. Nice and strong. Antique looking hammered finish. You'll be seeing these…Continue

I had a d-bow half made when the issue of a cigar box came up. Luckily I was able to take it apart and now I am close to done on my build. All salvaged material. And yes the rules are vague. But Shane has mentioned in this group the things he wants from the entries. Shoot the pieces I took off my prototype I'll use for a different contest/build. And this will be my first electric box guitar (fingers crossed).

#1 - i think shane has done a great job building this place up, and deserves the utmost respect for keeping the revolution alive.

#2 - having said that, i also feel that this contest could have been better worded. i'm really glad i had not started my contest entry yet, as i was about to build with a tin, and would have been upset.

#3 - this is a learning experience for all of us, and i'm sure that future contests will be tempered quickly by the challenges of this one.

#4 - yes, i would fully expect someone to at least attempt to use bicycle wire or old screen wire, HOWEVER, that instrument would have to be a diddley bow, as there is no way to use the same sized string for a multiple stringed instrument, they'd all have to be tuned the same - i've gotten six half-steps range out of fishing line, but far less out of a steel wire. SO - that instrument is not likely to be a valid entry for this contest either, because we can't build diddleys.

#5 - without geared tuners?? no big deal. i use eye bolts now. HOWEVER, finding a matched set of eye bolts and wing nuts in the trash is impossible, so my "junk build" will have to rely on real tuners which were scrapped from guitars i had years ago.

i think i'm pretty much sitting this contest out, i'll wait for the next one.

have a great day guys!!

I think it is all good. Gives us all another excuse to keep our imaginations going and keeps us building more. It should be fun anyway and not really a contest. I think Shane is doing a great job here.

If you really think about it most people are gonna use new or left over like new strings anyway... Don't really think some one is gonna rip out the string from an old screen do ya and find a way to actually tune these without using real tuners? 8^)

I think Shane is trying hard to make this a better place and a fun place to hang out... I also think he's a bit new at all of this, running contest, making and selling CBG, running an entire website and making everyone happy... So I believe this is an oversight for the contest.

As for me I'll take this lesson and move on with no hard feelings. I even came up with another Idea after pondering over what I could use and still be in the contest... It's only 50bucks anyway...

So maybe next time a check off sheet type of RULES would work out best for those who either don't read every little post here or just want to be part of the contest and left alone until it's over...one page of rules and that's it..

Anyway there is always next month...

I'm very dissapointed as well. Acording to the rules "It must be constructed out of 100% salvaged materials" It doesnt say there has to be an actual cigar box in the build. For the last 2 weeks, I've been putting together a guitar out of found Items and scrap , now it doesn't count?

close to done on my entry. excited to hear it.

Contest...So let me get this straight...1. the rule of no rules has been broken with a rule to MUST have CB in the build, from a Dumpster/Trash/Extra.. 2 That means no Tin Can Instruments. 3. No Diddle Bows.... HHHMMM OK, maybe next time...

Since 1994, the CanJoe Company has always been about taking what most throw away by using common beverage or food cans and creating beautiful, cool, unique, highly accurate musical instruments. Creating musically functional stringed instruments as high quality art made from cigar boxes, cookie tins, beverage cans, and anything similar is what I love to do more than anything and I look forward to all the great creations everyone in this group will be producing and sharing on this site. This is right up my alley.

I have so many piles of stuff I don't know where to start! People ask, "where'd you get that?" and I say it was free for hauling, then I correct myself, I got paid to haul it. As a scavenger with a truck I have been paid to clean out houses, garages, basements, attics barns, you name it. So the question is, if it's junk is it legal even if I was paid to haul it off instead of just a free find?
