Home Made Tools

One aspect of this addiction which has huge appeal to me is the DIY angle, making homemade music on homemade instruments. Taking it a step further, I have seen many homemade tools which help form the…Continue

Canoe Paddle Questions

I want to build a 3-stringer using a vintage paddle I found. The finished instrument will be donated to a fund-raiser for my paddle club. Planning on a single-coil pup. But it seems the back will have a lot of electronics hanging about and sticking out... which would seem to be a problem. I know many have built these... How do you construct them so the back resembles a finished product?? My thanks in advance.See More

Book Report: Real Artists Don't Starve

Posted on July 3, 2018 at 10:28am 1 Comment

No, this is not specifically CBG related, so feel free to move on.

In addition to my CBG hobby/addiction I have always had a passion for reading. I am finding this book to be quite interesting. Although I have no aspirations to be a 'real artist', I do find that I desire to create interesting roots instruments; many more than I need so I try to sell them. Some friends like them, buy them, or commission me to build for them, so I find myself selling art.

If you like the printed…

Ceramic Instruments

Not actually a CBG but DIY: My wife & I browsed a pottery gallery in Weaverville, NC recently where I spied a ceramic banjo. The thing is beautiful, and possesses unexpectedly nice tone and tremendous volume. The owner is a dude whose mother was a potter and whose father was an old time mountain banjo maker. Pretty cool stuff!   …

ONE YEAR IN

Posted on February 2, 2016 at 3:00pm 2 Comments

About a year ago I bumped into this video on a cold winter day:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BgiZ_A6objs

I was smitten. After scrounging a bunch of parts, and buying a few, my first CBG came to be. I am now about 12 instruments in with about 4 or 5 additional builds going.

Just wanted to thank you guys for all the input, encouragement, and 'rules' :)
