buzzing piezo

Alright, I went to my local radio shack yesterday and got the cheapest piezo buzzer they had (4 bucks) and a 2 pack of 1/4" jacks. I have soldered my wires to the buzzer and to the jack but when I plug it into my amp to try it out all I get is awful buzzing. I can tap it and get a response but it is barely audible over the buzzing. And even then I have to be holding it in my hands. If I lay it on the table the buzz gets too loud for anything. The jacks my shack has are built with 3 different contact points. I tried hooking up to the tab the input presses against and one on the side. Does it need to be grounded? I'm lost and trying not to get frustrated...

  • Hal, that's what I had done and it gave me a never ending drone/hum/buzz whenever I touched it or touched it against something. I stripped all my leads off of it and put one on the connector at about 2 o'clock and one at 7 o'clock and it works fine. I dunno.....
  • Yeah, Mike, you want to use the mono jacks if you can get them, but the stereo ones will work.  Just wire to the gound (the part with the mounting nut) and to the hook shaped part that makes contact with the tip of the plug when inserted.

Seems like I'm bumping this post but I wanted to update that I fixed it. Wanted to thank everyone for letting a rookie learn on his own (intentionally or not). I just mucked around until it finally worked. I said screw the YouTube vids and forged my own path with this one. She works though...maybe next time I will try one of those AC adapter coil pups...where is that youtube vid anyways...

  • For clarification this is the input jack I bought. After checking into it again, it is a stereo jack rather than mono. Only one my local shack had...is this likely the culprit?
