  • Wow! Great job looks nice!
  • Hi Chuck,

we have just completed our Fiberglass Bass uke , it has the following specs:-

    • Fibreglass, baritone, cutaway body, painted black.
    • Canadian ROCK Maple hand shaped neck
    • Hipshot tuners, we bought from Kala.
    • Black Hearted Sassafras tone wood.
    • Hand made bridge
    • Shadow SH064 passive pickup
    • Tiger Pearl purflings
    • Takamine style jack for pick up
    • Pahoehoe Dreads, ukulele bass strings
    • Nano Fretboard
    • Arch Back

I hope you like it, not a cigar box, but great Bass uke.

My muso friend Stu , played in bands and bass for 50 years is road testing it for me, he likes the action, advised its very easy to play.

  • I played with the black rubbery ones in the store and found them to be kinda sticky and tend to roll when you press them down. Aquilas have a much nicer feel.
  • Yeah, I played the black rubbery ones and didn't much care for them. I might be able to adjust to Aquilas a little better.

  • You are welcome Jim! I bought all the items for this build over a year ago but I had lots of other builds I wanted to do before I finally got around to it. It was really different from regular Uke builds and fun to do something different. The big strings have a rubbery feel to them but not as much as the black rubber ones used on On the Kala. It takes a little bit to get used to but in a fun way.
    Good luck!
  • Thanks for the info Chuck. I'm a big fan of Aquilas for my other instruments now I've got another build to look forward too!

  • Thanks for the comments guys!
Yes Jim, they are "Aquila Thundergut" strings made for the 20" Scale Ukulele style Bass. I bought the tuning machines ($20), nut ($6), and Aquila Thundergut Bass Ukulele Strings ($24) from Large Sound a little over a year ago. I messed up and cut my fret slots for a 23" scale so after I realized what I had done I relocated the bridge to make it 23" scale. I have noticed that the E string will buzz a bit sometimes, I think this is a result of the longer scale length causing the string to vibrate farther than it would have on the 20" scale they were designed for.

    Uncle John,
UBass is one style of Bass Ukulele, Ashbory is another short scale Bass that is kinda popular.
  • Thanks, Daniel.  I took a look at that.     Huh!   First I have heard of a uke based bass.  Thanks, Chuck.

  • UBASS are a series of bass ukuleles made by Kala.

  • Cool Chuck! Are those the regular U bass strings? Definitely easier to carry around than the last bass I made!
