Christmas Eve and I've just finished this guitar. Commissioned by Hollowbelly, UK Punk Blues legend. Aluminium body, continental cone, mini-humbucker with 3-way microtoggle, vintage Grover open-back tuners, ebony fretboard, ash and mahogany neck.Knowing that Hollowbelly doesn't like shiny guitars, I've heat treated the alu body and coverplate and darkened the finish on the neck.

  • way good!

  • Looks and sounds great. I love the distressing.

  • Awesome build John .. Sounds good to me ...

  • You are the man, well done John, so sweet and awesome playing skills.

  • Sounds good. Possibly a little too high ended. Maybe using heavier strings and lower tunings will improve the balance. Usually aluminum is not used for resonator bodies. The softness tends to absorb the sound. Although, essentially using a face mounted pick-up negates the cone all together. As you noticed, you are going to have feedback problems with a hollow body at higher volume levels. Regardless, it is a very fine proto. Happy Holidays. Enjoy.

  •  I don t know which i like best ,, Ur playing or the guitars u build ,,, both are absolutely amazing !!

  • Reso's are not easy, otherwise everyone would be building them. This turned out really bitchin' John and HB's a lucky cat for sure. Good to see the alumareso's in action, cheers bros.

  • Beautiful sound. And the looks reminds me of a woman of my acquaintance. She wears thrift shop and reworked ragbag clothing by choice - along with a leather jacket and pair of Prada boots that came with price tags that would pay my mortgage for two months. She's a study in contrasts - and utterly lovely, both to look at and listen to.

Much like that little guitar you've made.

My hat is off to you, Sir!

  • Sa-weeet! hey when it comes to setting up you'll be glad to learn I just figured out what my 4th skinny string was tuned to (lol!) by using an online tuner-its C sharp. So thats A/E/A/C sharp. Cheers! 'belly.

  • I'm still learning with each guitar I make. The 4 string resos are more difficult to get right than the 3 strings, as it's very easy to overload the cone. The cone sinks quite lot under the pressure of the strings, so it's really important not to use too high a string tension. Also, getting the geometry of the neck/body/saddle height is critical to get them playable - setting the action is time consuming and fiddly..I usually end up having to take off the coverplate and re-string at least 6 times, and re-cut the saddle at least twice.
