Man... lovin' that blues style. This is a great technique vid.
Hello Paul: There was something about the thumb in your playing which rang a bell. I looked up Mance Lipscomb on Wikipedia, and there he is described as the king of the 'dead thumb' style of blues players from Texas. Actually I worked on the covers of Chris Stracwitz's 'Arhoolie records of Mance Lipscomb and other people like Bukka White, Clifton Chenier etc. in San Francisco in the late '60s, while I was going to grad school for painting. Your 'dead thumb' playing sounds like Lipscomb, which ain't bad at all... especially on a 3 string guitar. I just recorded everything you have on Youtube. It is great stuff and highly recommended for aspiring players.
Hello Paul: Very good tutorial and Mississippi alternating thumb style. Sounds great. While studying art in NY in 1964, I took a few lessons from Reverend Gary Davis protege Stephan Grossman, who has a whole pile of books and DVD's on his Kicking Mule Records label. He has kept this style alive with MANY followers on traditional 6 string guitar. I have seen a couple of people use alternating thumb finger picking on cigar box guitars but I want to see your DVD. You seem to get the beat and the technique across in a very understandable fashion.. I myself can play Rev. Davis' 'Candy Man' on a 6 string. Once you get the alternating bass and pinching going on with the thumb and the pointing and index finger, you can adapt the same pattern to tons of songs and chords very easily. Well done! And please post your DVD information on Cigar Box Nation AND Youtube! Also, what is the company name of your guitar input with the volume knob. I have seen a few other people use it and it looks handy. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO PAUL AND EVERYBODY ON CIGAR BOX NATION!
Thanks Paul. I could clearly see what you were doing. Just to my liking. I’ll try some of your riffs.
"Great Lesson" and a very well played, and easily explained tutorial, looking forward to more of the same! "Well Done Paul" :-)
Great lesson Thank you!
Good thumb and play!
