Yeah James, after a few more looks I don't think the setter would help much since your f holes are pretty far from the bridge. On a violin the f holes are right beside the bridge and you can reach through to place/adjust a sound post. The luthier may have some good ideas on this. Don't tell him I cut a hole in the back of one of mine. set a sound post, then put a decorative patch over the hole!
I don't have a sound post setter. I met a local luthier that might help me out with that though. I've been thinking about making a violin from a kit, so I might just get one anyway. After making the solid wood one, I'm convinced about using all wood for acoustic. I wouldn't say it sounds better (just different), but it's definitely louder, so that's nice for an acoustic instrument.
I suspect you're correct about paper covered boxes. I much prefer all wood for acoustic instruments but I'm working on a fiddle with paper on one side and plywood on the other. Do you have a sound post setter? They're fairly inexpensive and make the job a lot easier.
Thanks! I don't think the bass bar on a paper covered box would work as well because you are just gluing to the paper. I'll put it in future all-wood boxes though, as well as trying the sound post. If I cut the f-holes a bit bigger I might even be able to sneak a post in the git in the video.
The old box with the bass bar is my favorite. You might try bass bar and sound post combination on one of your next ones to complete the violin type innards. I've done that on mandolins and like the sound.
