I wholeheartedly agree with the "play it as you'd sing it" technique. Always worked for me. Next, I've got to try shredder Lori Linstruth's 'uber-secret wah pedal trick'! :-))
(That's the one where you make "dorky wah pedal faces" whenever you use one. It improves the sound of your wah pedal amazingly. Or so she says.)
Funny you mention the Gothic mood because as soon as I saw the video of the tree with color corrections, I thought "here we go again! Another Gothic image...". You see, I've been following the Gothic music scene since the mid 80's (no vampires or other sissy crap) and although I've always listened to pretty much everything out there, it has been and remains a strong influence.
About the voice... I guess it comes from the fact that I sing the line in my head as I play it and play it the way I'd sing it aloud. Glad it works!
Conjures up images of an out of focus figure sitting in the left foreground while we look out the windshield of an old truck, through moody coils of cigarette smoke, at heavy snow falling on a deserted back road. Talk about a roots-themed Gothic mood you're setting...
Truly love the tone you're pulling out of that thing. Almost sounds like it's going to morph into a human voice in a few places. Well done!
The sound is the result of the combination of a piezo and a humbucker pickup. They sound nice each on its own but combined, it's perfect! A little reverb and delay in my POD XT and voilà!
when i built my first guitar, not knowing any thing about playing a guitar this was the sound i imagined my self trying to get from it, not sure what happened, lol, but your playing is really fine, great sound, very nice, i love it!!!
