Cardboard Fiddle

This video was from a couple years ago, but I recycled a cardboard ice pack box into a two string fiddle. It may not be an actual cigar box but it embraces the DIY spirit of recycling found objects into instruments.

  • I build my bowed instruments with two strings to simplify construction. Two string fiddles don't need a rounded fingerboard to be playable with either single note or drone playing.
Maybe one time or another I could try out a three or four-string drone/chord fiddle where all the strings are ringing out in a block chord, as like the bowed lyre family such as the Nordic talharpa or the Welsh crwth.

  • That ice box sounds pretty darn good.

  • :D

  • "Awesome" indeed! Been wanting to build one of these...

    Thanks!

  • I used heavy fishing line (softer than steel strings) and the neck construction actually makes contact with the top surface to hold the instrument's tension.
